Started playing golf at the same time as the rest of his family aged five after his parents played on holiday in South Africa.
Had a celebrated amateur college career in America, where he overcame Major Champion Jordan Spieth and former World Amateur Number One Patrick Cantlay to win the NCAA Division I Golf Championship in his sophomore year at the University of Illinois before progressing through all three stages of the 2013 Qualifying School.
Impressed in his debut season before winning twice in consecutive appearances in the Czech Republic and Netherlands before adding a third at the 2016 Made in Denmark. Finished fourth at the Rio Olympics and as one of Darren Clarke’s wildcard picks became the first European Ryder Cup rookie to win four points at Hazeltine, where he played every match.
Favourite course you’ve played on the European Tour?
Leopard Creek in South Africa, no doubt. The views on that course are amazing! The Old Course at St. Andrews stands as a very worthy second place.
What’s your best Callaway club in the bag?
My wedges, for sure. Mr. Cleveland made me some to my preferences. And my driver - I like to hit it very far.
What would you have done for a living if golf didn’t work out?
Be a professional snowboarder
What are your longest recorded drives?
+/- 420 yards during the 2014 NH Collection Open (Spain) & 407 yards during the 2016 Alfred Dunhill Links Ch’ship (Scotland).
If you could, which golf rule would you change?
The rule that you can’t take mulligans. A second serve would come in handy from time to time.
How far away are you from playing full-time on the PGA Tour?
About 5,000 miles
What is your lowest official round?
62 during the third round of the 2015 KLM Open
